Yamaneko
Our Origin Story
Yamaneko is an evolution of a strong legacy of dedication. Formally known as Drumbrae Judo Club. It has been a cornerstone of the Edinburgh judo community for over 30 years. Founded by the late Donald Hughes (5th Dan). A true pioneer of grassroots judo, Donald dedicated over 60 years of his life to the sport. He established a network of clubs across the city, with Drumbrae serving as a testament to his vision of making judo a "way of life" accessible to everyone.
The club’s philosophy, rooted in its founder’s principles, views judo as a tool for personal growth. Rather than focusing on competitive accolades, Drumbrae Judo Club prioritizes a culture of respect, discipline, and community. Its mission is to help members develop fundamental skills and confidence in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Located at the Drumbrae Leisure Centre, the club is a vital community hub where children and adults alike can learn and grow. The club's focus on "FUNdamentals" and personal improvement is a direct reflection of Donald Hughes’s belief that the true value of judo lies in its ability to inspire and build character.
Continuing the Tradition: Drumbrae Judo Club under our new club name Yamaneko will continue to honour Donald Hughes's legacy by fostering a love for the sport that goes beyond the mat. By focusing on personal milestones and the development of its members, the club ensures that the spirit of its founder-a lifetime of dedication to judo-lives on in every class.
